Brazil Jute

Malachra capitata

Description:

Large rounded leaves with wavy margins. Rough stems. Yellow flowers. Simple. Ants on flowers= nectar-rich??

Habitat:

This year this plant has sprung up everywhere along the roadsides of the residential colony. I thought it was a weed but my neighbour said it had pretty yellow flowers. She was correct in her observation.

Notes:

All thanks to Jonathan Hiew for the ID. In Hindi it is called Bon-bhindi roughly meaning Wild okra(ladyfinger) According to reports the fibres make excellent ropes; second only to jute.

Many thanks Jonathan Hiew....for the ID. It is really nice to be able to put a name to a spotting and to learn a little more about the diversity at my doorstep. Many, many thanks.

Probably not Hibiscus. It is Malvaceae. Maybe it is Brazil Jute (Malachra capitata).

Jonathan Hiew...not like any Hibiscus I have seen...small flowers. Round leaves, large.
Malvaceae you mean?
