Yes ForestDragon, it looked like it was hurting. It was in a parking lot where I spotted it.

Though it is a bit worse for wear, I believe this is likely to be a Lobelia Dagger Moth caterpillar, Acronicta lobeliae. http://bugguide.net/node/view/3679
