Spotting

Notes:

Found what appears to be an incomplete bird skull on Island Beach State Park in New Jersey (central/southeast NJ). From the looks of it, it seems to have been under the water for quite some time, not sure how many of the features that may have eroded away. I found it buried under a bit of sand washed up on shore. I'd love to know what kind of animal this was, any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance! Skull is about 9 cm long from tip to tip and about 3.5 cm wide at the largest part.

Thanks, both of you! The remains forum was exactly what I was looking for!

Right size and shape for a gull skull. One of the smaller species... like ring-billed, which are common up your way. No way to know for sure, but that's my guess.

This could go in the Identifying Animals Through Osteology mission at http://www.projectnoah.org/missions/8475...
