Australian Screw Pine

Pandanus spiralis

Description:

Neither palm nor pine, this small tree produces these bright orange fruits which contain delicious almond-like seeds.

Habitat:

Northern Australia.

Notes:

In order to get the edible seeds from the hard poisonous fruit you have to burn it, chop it with an axe, and then pry the seeds out and roast them. Its a considerable amount of work for a handful of nuts. Historically, some Aboriginal tribes had the ability to harvest enough food from these plants to feed them for the entire day in only 1-2 hours.
