Black Rhinoceros

Diceros bicornis

Description:

Unmistakable beast. Slightly smaller than White Rhino (1,60 cm of height against 1,90), it also has narrow mouth and prehensile upper lip. Huge head carries two distinctive horns, front horn being larger and may measure over 60 cm in length. Normally, skin is grey (same color as White Rhino), but appears brown because of Rhino's predilection to wallow in mud.

Habitat:

They favor a dry bushy savannas and lightly wooded areas. Here seen in Nairobi National Park.

Notes:

Over the past 30 to 35 years, the distribution of this species has been much reduced, and numbers of animals have drastically gone down, up to the point that the species became threatened with extinction. This is mainly fueled by increased demand fro horns by Arab countries (for ceremonial daggers) and by Far East countries (as medicine and aphrodisiac).
