Western thatching ants

Description:

A fairly large red and black ant. This is a partially destroyed hive.

Habitat:

Common in the Northwest especially where there are fir trees. This hive was unfortunately located on a piece of property that was cleared for construction. When I found it they where frantically trying to rebuild it.
