Dice Snake

Natrix tessellata

Description:

Relatively small non-venomous snake, about 40 to 50 cm long. We saw three of them, roughly of the same size, all three submerged for long time and all three hardly moving, in ambushes...

Habitat:

Excellent swimmer, common in Balkans, we saw this snake (and two others) in ambush, in a shallow waters of a small stream, in a probably brackish waters, in an urban setting. Strictly mediterranean climate of Dubrovnik riviera, Pelješac peninsula.
