Nymphalis antiopa
Burgundy brown upper wings, with broad yellow band along outer edge. Light blue spots in an inner dark brown band. Cryptic markings and colour of the underwings are good camouflage for the tree bark or gravel where I have seen these butterflies. Note the marks from bird predation on the central outer band of this one.
2 weary but still beautiful individuals were resting and flitting around the lake edge at Lightning Lake, Manning Park, BC during this hot dry summer. North Cascades mountain range. Common butterfly in BC.
