Scarlet dragonfly

Crocothemis erythraea

Description:

Crocothemis erythraea is a species of dragonfly belonging to darter family (Libellulidae), and its common names include broad scarlet, common scarlet-darter, scarlet darter and scarlet dragonfly. Pictured here is mature male, who has a bright red body, including the head and eyes. It reaches some 4,5 cm in body length, and shows somewhat flattened abdomen. Immature individuals and females are yellowish brown with reddish eyes. All stages show yellow orange patch at the base of hind-wings.

Habitat:

Favours stagnant bodies of water. Here, seen on lakes near Kinshasa, in a valley called 'Ma valée'.

Notes:

My previous post (the same species but clicked in Croatia) reminded me of this one - an older spot which, at the time, I was unable to ID... Now, thanks to my activities with NOAH, I keep digging my archives, and finding some almost forgotten pearls...
