Live Oak

Quercus virginiana

Description:

The Quercus virginiana, commonly known as the live oak, is a tree found throughout the Trinity Prep campus. Many birds use this tree as a nesting site, and many species use the live oak's acorns for food, notably the threatened Florida scrub jay, wild turkeys, black bears, as well various species of squirrels (as seen in pictures above). Today, it is still a popular lumber product. The live oak also acts as a host plant for different butterfly and moth larvae. The southern live oak is a tall single stem tree with thick bark and rounded green leaves. The average height of a mature oak is about 50 ft. ~Natalie Hoeg and Josie Starling

Habitat:

It is native to Southern United States, from Virginia to Florida to Texas.

Notes:

During the times of wooden military ships, many of the US Navy's ships were constructed using the wood of the live oak, most famously the USS Constitution!
