Emesaya brevipennis
Stick bug, about 3 inches long. Found underneath a board walk railing, partially stuck in a spider web.
Deciduous forest
I imagine it will find another. :-)
For comparison to a Northern Walkingstick. http://bugguide.net/node/view/1134083/bg...
hmm... Interesting. I did notice the graspers, but didn't know walking sticks didn't have them. I guess I just assumed, because it looked like a walking stick. Also I thought I was saving it from the spider web, now i just feel like a jerk interrupting its dinner.
This insect is really cool! Notice how it has specialized front legs for grasping. Walkingsticks do not have that. Some species of Thread-legged Assassin Bugs live in spider webs (I believe they feed on insects that get trapped in the web).
