Skunk Cabbage

Lysichiton americanus

Description:

smelly flower

Habitat:

swamp

Notes:

The skunk cabbage has a strange life cycle. It lives underground in December and January. The skunk cabbage emerges from late February through May. When it blooms it smells like pee. That attracts flies. The flies get in there and become trapped. They get covered in pollen. The flies are released and the plant goes to seed.
