The stripes and abdomen markings on the fly are more yellowish than in the pictures which turned out quite dark due to the lighting.

Hi Forest Dragon. Thought it was a flesh fly at first but this one has dark eye area (flesh flies are red) NZ flesh flies look like my spotting http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/173... so not quite sure what it is

Hi Jill, nice spotting! I think this might be a different species of fly than Helophilus seelandicus.

Your striped fly reminds me more of a species of Flesh Fly, Genus Sarcophaga. Check out this page:
