Magnolia virginiana
Fairly small for a Magnolia, the leaves are about seven inches long and very tough. The leaves also produce a distinctive odor when crushed. It produces large, white flowers in the spring and and pine cone-like fruits in fall.
Usually on the edge of the woods.
Sorry about the dark picture.

Based on the white color and the scent of the broken leaves, it seems a lot like sweetbay magnolia, Magnolia virginiana. The leaves are usually smaller, say 4 to 6 inches, rather than 7 inches. Check out http://www.sfrc.ufl.edu/4h/Sweetbay_magn... for information about this tree in Florida, which might apply in Louisiana as well.
Yes.
Any chance the leaves are whitish on the underside, compared to the rusty red of southern magnolia or the green of most other magnolias?
