Pacific Loon (winter)

Gavia pacifica

Description:

There is a big difference between the winter plumage and the summer. The winter plumage is mostly just greyish brown from top of bill, down back of neck, back and wings.. The neck, chest and belly are white. Bill is straight dagger like and light grey. Head is rounded on top. Can migrate in flocks. This one was single but a couple of others have been spotted in the bay area.

Habitat:

Winters is the ocean and in lakes along the coast.

Notes:

Spotted in a lake near the SF bay. It was also spotted not far from a Red-throated Loon.
