Dagger or balloon fly

Empidinae

Description:

. Common names for members of this family are dagger flies (referring to the sharp piercing mouthparts of some species) and balloon flies. The term "dance flies" is sometimes used for this family too, but the dance flies proper are now considered a separate family. They exhibit a wide range of forms but are generally small to medium sized, non-metallic and rather bristly.

Habitat:

Mason Farm Biological Reserve

Notes:

These small flies were buzzing back and forth over some standing water in a forest area They flew very fast and it was difficult to get sharp, in-focus photos

Maria dB, that makes sense. The folks at Bugguide are the best.

Thanks for the ID suggestion, drP. I submitted this to BugGuide and they said it wouldn't be a tiger mosquito since the short, thick beak and antennae are typical of dance and balloon flies.
