Purple sea urchin

Sphaerechinus granularis

Description:

An attractive, large and densely spiked sea urchin. Spikes are purple but white-tipped, providing an overall whitish appearance.

Habitat:

Found in shallow waters, on rocky bottom with plenty of seaweed.

Notes:

All of sea urchins we observed this summer, and many other sea species, are my son's finds - he adores all sea creatures, and usually spends all of his holiday looking for them. Sea urchins are among his favorites; and after taking them (he is doing it rather expertly, I must admit) out, we take photos and notes and put them back into water.
