The Pied Wagtail is a mainly British sub-species of the much more common White Wagtail (actually grey and white) which is found throughout Europe, Asia, North Africa and parts of Australia (coastal).
Related species include the Grey, Citrine and Yellow Wagtails which have similar distribution and the Yellows have numerous sub-species with widely variable plumages, some being so different that they are considered by some authorities as separate species.
Willie Wagtails and other Rhipidura species are known as Fantails.
Lovely bird, Malcolm. I've never seen one of these. I checked out Youtube, and they do wag their tails. So awesome, and their song is sweet. We have willie wagtails in Australia, but they are little thugs by comparison. They look sinister too - http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/163... They cause the crows a lot of grief.
Lovely!!! One of the main characters in my favorite childhood books ... "River Song"... Was a pied wagtail! I've never seen one (but I really want to!)
