Hooded Merganser

Lophodytes cucullatus

Description:

The Hooded Merganser is a small duck and is the only member of the genus Lophodytes. Hooded Mergansers have a crest at the back of the head which can be expanded or contracted

Notes:

After a pretty intense amount of snow was dumped on the panhandle during my photography tour up here for a week, I finally managed to get out this AM after being snowed in all day yesterday. The roads are still not cleared for travel outside about a mile radius, but I pushed through some sketchy exits, engaged 4-wheel drive, and got my Hooded Mergansers for this trip. Only a handful of birds left to find.
