Yellowjacket Hover Fly

Milesia virginiensis

Description:

A large hoverfly that has markings that resemble a hornet, the southern yellowjacket. I noticed it buzzes very loud like a hornet as well. It measures 18-21 mm.

Habitat:

Spotted on sunflowers along a forest edge at Mt. Magazine State Park. Mostly deciduous forests nearby.

Notes:

Ranges in eastern North America. Hoverflies are considered important pollinators for many ecosystems.

Thank you so much Leuba. I often struggle to get quality macro shots of bugs with my camera (Nikon Coolpix p1000) as it is better suited for taking long distant pics. I've enjoyed what the camera does although it has many limitations, for the price and what it can deliver, I can't complain.
