Tricolor Soldier Beetle

Chauliognathus tricolor

Description:

About 10mm long. Thick abdomen was orangey-yellow, elytra and head were black and thorax, a brilliant red. The elytra were shorter than the abdomen.

Habitat:

Eucalyptus tree - nature reserve Distribution in Australia http://bie.ala.org.au/species/Chauliogna...

Notes:

These are not as common as the other Chauliognathus species, the plague beetle so it was thrilling to see one of these. This beetle was resting between two leaves and when disturbed it tried to move to the other side of the leaf, away from view. Belongs to Family Cantharidae
