These galls began to appear earlier this year but at the end of summer all female galls seem to have been parasitized and died before they developed. There were no male galls to be seen. Compare with the healthy community last season in the last pic. http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/783...
The female lays eggs and the males grow on her gall, creating the large spindle process below. I saw this feature only twice in the last few years but this season may have been sufficiently difficult for them to become so prolific as in my last spotting.
