Pygmy Nuthatch

Sitta pygmaea

Description:

Pygmy Nuthatches are tiny songbirds with short, square tails, large, rounded heads, and straight, sharp bills. The legs are short and the wings are short and broad. Pygmy Nuthatches have slate gray wings and back, with a rich brown cap that ends in a sharp line through the eye. The underparts are whitish to pale buff.

Habitat:

Pine forest at Angel Fire N.M.

Notes:

It is one of only two nuthatch species in the world known to have helpers at the nest. Offspring from previous years help their parents raise young. A group of nuthatches are collectively known as a "jar" of nuthatches.
