Many of these were dog-fighting over water. Very small.. estimated at 36mm long. Wouldn't come onto fully dry land. A similar sized one but metallic bronze grey instead of the blue was seen momentarily mating with a blue one.

Peter Chew's description fits this one perfectly... small damselflies which can be found near slow running water or still water, usually resting on the plants in the middle of ponds or near edges. It looks similar to the Common Bluetail and Blue Riverdamsel except Eastern Billabongfly is smaller

Thanks Merineliza. You're probably right. I'll check fully tomorrow. My only issue with that name is it's described as a 'large' damselfly and these were possibly the smallest ones I've ever seen.
It could be Ischnura heterosticta. But you may need to verify that.
