Devil's Coach Horse Beetle

Ocypus olens

Description:

Black armored beetle. 1.5 to 2 inches long. Completely dull black with no markings. Raises its tail like a scorpion when threatened.

Habitat:

Native to Europe. Invasive to US. This one was in Portland, Oregon. It was in my garden, on the first rain of September after a long dry spell.

Notes:

Warning: This beetle has a painful bite and can shoot smelly liquid from its tail. They eat snails and slugs.
