Eastern Gray Squirrel

Sciurus carolinensis

Description:

I saw this squirrel eating bark (or perhaps the green lichen on the bark). I can tell you this, it was much too interested in eating then worrying about someone standing a few feet away with a big camera.

Habitat:

I found this squirrel in a pine tree on the "Brandon Parkway," a suburban walking trail. The trail, located in the middle of a busy town of Brandon, outside Tampa, Florida, is lined with trees, ponds, native and tropical vegetation. It is a pleasant place to walk or jog, and there is lots of resident wildlife to see, with migrating visitors from time to time. The Eastern Squirrel is the most popular wild mammal in the park and the surrounding neighborhoods.
