Western Ribbon Snake

Thamnophis proximus

Description:

A very small western ribbon snake I found while doing some work in my garden. I was at first convinced this was a common garter as they appear here in the Midwest or even a plains garter, but the lack of black striping on the lower jaw makes me question that. It doesn't help the quality of the cell camera I used doesn't really contrast the bold orange line going down this snakes side.

Habitat:

I couldn't find much on this species but they're prominent enough through North and Central America to have several subspecies.
