I believe you may have found some young Stinkhorn fungus. Before the fruiting body emerges, they look a bit like eggs. Some of them seem to have some gelatinous interior. Perhaps these were damaged and decomposing. Here is an example of one species. http://virginiawildflowers.org/2012/10/#...
