Red-throated Loon (winter)

Description:

Smallest of the loons, this winter bird is lacking it's breeding plumage. Grey on the top of head, back of neck and back with white underparts. At this stage in color gives a similar look to a Grebe. In this phase the eyes appear larger. Head looks flat on top. They have a thick dagger like bill in a dark grey. The Red-Throated has it's bill and head pointing upward to those of loon species.

Habitat:

Large lakes and ponds and sheltered bays.

Notes:

Spotted near a Pacific Loon.
