A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Petroica australis australis
Small song bird, dark grey body and wings and head, round chest is a cream to yellow cream. Small straight beak, small white/cream line across the top of the beak. Black eyes, black legs, med length grey tail. A small bird, but stands up straight and looks larger than other birds of the same size.
Seen in undergrowth of woodland around a lake.
These robins have a reputation of being 'friendly' as they often approach people in the bush or hang round people trekking or wood chopping or farming activities etc... but what they are really doing is looking for the bugs you stir up as you move through the bush. New Zealand has a lot of wood eating grubs and if you are wood chopping on the west coast, you will always have a hopeful robin hanging around waiting for a big juicy grub or crunchy weta to be exposed.
