Ruffed Grouse

Bonasa umbellus

Description:

This is a snow cave dug by a ruffed grouse. During tough winters they will bury themselves in the snow to stay warm, but true to their nature, they'll bust if anything comes too close. In this case, it was deer (see final picture). You can see the wing marks in the snow from it busting.

Habitat:

Temperate deciduous/coniferous forest. 2 1/2 feet of snow in this spot.
