Red-tailed Hawk

Buteo jamaicensis

Description:

though very large I think this is a juvenile, its tail is square, dull brown with many dark bars, dark chocolate brown mottled with white, a common site soaring overhead among our large trees; reddish wash across breast of white

Habitat:

urban schoolyard

Notes:

we've seen it catch & eat squirrels; not too bothered by this being a schoolyard - in this picture it is perched on a Cherry tree right next to the front entrance of the school with people around; we've also seen it being mobbed by crows and mockingbirds
