Chionanthus virginicus

Description:

An understory tree with opposite, simple, entire leaves. The flowers have four long thin petals, giving the tree its common name. Fringetree is a member of the olive family.

Habitat:

Temperate mixed woods.

Thanks, YukoC. It does produce fruit. I've rarely seen it, but they are small dark blue fruit. I hear they don't taste good. I should make a point to check out these local trees this year. Fringetree is dioecious, but I expect that at least one of the several trees nearby is a female.
