Eastern Gray Squirrel

Sciurus carolinensis

Description:

This was the second time I found a young gray squirrel approaching people on campus at Western Kentucky University. This one was young enough that I knew he still needed to be with mom. When I arrived on scene the little guy was obviously not doing well. He was lethargic and when I pinch tested his skin, I found he was slightly dehydrated. After stabilizing the little guy I tried to reunite him with his mom where the students said they had first picked him up, but there were no other squirrels around, only a hawk patiently waiting for me to lose interest. I decided it would be best to take him to a wildlife rehab facility. Judging by his condition, he hadn't been with his mother in quite some time. I'm continually surprised by how often I come across these cases on this college campus. All the young grey squirrels are very comfortable approaching and even initiating contact with people. None of these babies have been caught, one literally jumped into my hand on its own will.

I'm not sure what ultimately happened to him there. He was in pretty good shape when I took him there though. I had to take care of him over a weekend before I could get him there and he was well hydrated, eating/nursing well, and quite playful by that time. I always take rescues to a fantastic place called Walden's Puddle. They have a great reputation and I'm sure he was well cared for after I handed him off. Their goal is always to release if possible.
