Wheel Bug

Arilus cristatus

Description:

Brownish gray, 1 1/2 inches long, with a dorsal crest shaped like a wheel or a cog.

Habitat:

Common in North America. Wheel bugs are highly regarded by organic gardeners because they consume a variety of insects and their presence indicates a healthy, pesticide-free ecosystem.

Notes:

A storm had just passed through the area with torrential downpours and heavy winds. I found this guy hanging on to the front of my house, about 2 feet off of the ground.
