Rough Six-armed Sea Star

Leptasterias hexactis

Description:

I found many of these six armed starfish usually under rocks. They ranged in size from 3 to 5 cm. and had a lot of variations in color as seen in pics 2 and 3. These starfish are carnivores and are capable of attacking and capturing large prey such as sea cucumbers, snails, limpets, mussels, chitons and barnacles as well as carrion.

Habitat:

Tide pool at Tongue Point a marine sanctuary. An intertidal species that ranges from British Columbia to southern California.

Notes:

Echinoderms have a few important aspects in common. They have bony ossicles in their body. They have a water-vascular system which pumps water through the madroporite. They also have small jaws that are supported by the water-vascular system. And they have tube feet which they use to attach to objects, for protection, as well as to obtain food. They have radial symmetry and most can regenerate lost limbs.

Thank you very much swain17. These sea stars colors can be quite varied. In the second picture there are six of them and they all have a different color. As for your question about if it was under the sea or on land - this species of sea star is considered an intertidal species - so they exist in both. They are under the sea at high tide and on the land at low tide.
