Spotted salamander

Ambystoma maculatum

Description:

A robust and colorful mole salamander. Dark background with two offset rows of yellow spots. Spots nearest the head are orange or reddish in mature individuals.

Habitat:

Fossorial, spending most of its time underground in wooded areas, these salamanders may be found under logs near vernal pools during breeding season.

Notes:

The spotted salamander is the official State Amphibian of South Carolina.
