Hairy Galls

Description:

Hundreds of leaves on the forest floor were covered in these odd galls, reddish brown in color and hairy. They all occurred on the undersides of the leaves. How the plant tissue is producing these hairy galls in a mystery, especially is such large numbers. The third picture shows just how hairy and close together the galls were. The upper side of the leaves were spotted with brown and small puncture holes, which may be the exit point for whatever insect was inside them (last picture).

Habitat:

Forest trail along the San Vicente River, Chiflón Waterfall Park, Chiapas, Mexico.

Ha ha Brian! I loved Star Trek, but had forgotten about the Tribbles. Had to go look it up. Very apt comparison! At least these don't seem to eat much.

Large numbers? These might be Tribble babies. I know I need to work on my humor. Awesome looking gall Lauren!
