Eastern Grey Kangaroo

Macropus giganteus

Description:

Eastern Grey Kangaroos are a beautiful browny grey, paler beneath & they have dark tip fur on the tail. Their bodylength can be up to 1.3metres with their tails up to 1metre, the females being slightly smaller. Large hind legs enable them to bound along at great speed, up to 35 miles an hour or 56 km per hour. They will fight over females & lean back on their tails & 'box' other males with their strong hind legs. They will also bite & use their long sharp claws in defence. Newborns climb into the females pouch & will stay there for 2 months, after this they will emerge, though staying close to Mum to return quickly to the pouch if threatened. They do this until around 11 months of age.

Habitat:

Found in most of Eastern Australia. These kangaroos were spotted on the beach at dawn feeding on washed up seaweed, leaves & sticks.

Notes:

Cape Hillsborough N.P.

Your spotting has been nominated for the Spotting of the Week. The winner will be chosen by the Project Noah Rangers based on a combination of factors including: uniqueness of the shot, status of the organism (for example, rare or endangered), quality of the information provided in the habitat and description sections. There is a subjective element, of course; the spotting with the highest number of Ranger votes is chosen. Congratulations on being nominated!
