Western Diamondback Rattlesnake

Crotalus Atrox

Description:

A pair of Crotalus Atrox. Both were a beautiful dark brown color morph that I've never seen outside of this area.

Habitat:

Landslid boulders near the top of a mesa. The snakes were up against a sandstone layer above a boulder field.

Notes:

Near White Mesa bike trails. I've seen two other Atrox with the same color scheme within two miles of here. It was a pretty cool day, the high only being 64 F, so I was surprised to see them. I also saw a neonate Atrox about half a mile from these two, but was unable to photograph him. The neonate had a much more typical, and much lighter color morph.
