Forest Tent caterpillar

Malacosoma disstria

Description:

Dark-gray to brownish-black background body color, highlighted by blue lines and thin, broken yellow lines extending along each side; dorsum of each abdominal segment has distinct whitish keyhole-shaped marking. Body has fine, sparsely distributed hairs

Habitat:

I spotted a bunch of these caterpillars throughout a deciduous forest area at Bent of the River Audubon. This one was crawling along the roots of a tree on the bank of a stream, and it kept getting stuck in the sand.
