Owlet moth

Erebus ephesperis

Description:

It is a large Owlet moth, around 100 mm wingspan, in the family Erebidae. The moth has dark brown coloring with multiple white and mud colored lines, as well as two chocolate colored eye spots. Toward the outer margins consists of light brown with a rigid border between the two shades of browns.

Habitat:

It was found in Jog falls in Karnataka, S India. This is along the Western Ghats, which consists of dense rainforest, and scrubland. This specimen was found attracted to the lodge lights.

Notes:

This species seems to be quite abundant during monsoon and postmonsoon months. Also found sitting sideways on tree trunks, blending in.
