Common Woodpigeon; Paloma Torcaz

Columba palumbus

Description:

Far from being a dull, grey bird, the Woodpigeon seen close-up is a handsome bird. It is easy to identify due to the white on its neck and wings, and the dark band in the tail, also visible in flight. Young ones are darker without white at the neck. The call is a dreamy coo-coo-coo typical of the woodland areas. Flight straight and quick. It takes off with a loud clattering during take off. The display flight is very distinctive strong flapping rising up and gliding down with stiff wings.

Habitat:

Spotted at a riverine forest in a small town. Segovia
