This horsefly carcass was found as pictured. This was the doing of a Loggerhead Shrike that impaled the insects thorax with the barbed wire fence.
Farmland
This is very possible! It was on farmland and there is an abundance of thorned Honey Locust trees in that area. That would make a lot more sense. Editing.
Yes I think Machi is most likely onto it. We have a few 'butcher birds' in Australia too. Sometimes there are several victims on one thorny bush.
Did you see it collide with it? It looks like a possible prey of a Loggerhead Shrike, in which case that would be very cool.
