Nice find! This bird looks more like a Fox Sparrow. Fox Sparrows are a large sparrow that are found feeding on the ground. They throw the leaf litter (or mulch in this case) around as they search for food. Song sparrows pretty much stick to bushes and trees and are not often found on the ground.
