Snowy Owl

Bubo scandiacus

Description:

One of the largest species of Owl with a wingspan of 49–59 in and on average it is the heaviest Owl in North America weighing 3.5 to 6.6 lb.

Habitat:

Snowy Owls breed in the Arctic Tundra and winter south through Canada.

Notes:

I took this photograph in the prairies east of Calgary. Given the heavy barring it looks like a female. Probably my last Snowy Owl spotting for this winter.

Congrats Ian! This stunning capture has been chosen as spotting of the day!

Unlike most other owl species, snowy owls hunt mainly in the daytime, preying upon birds, as well as mammals, ranging from small rodents to large hares. An adult owl may also eat around 1600 lemmings per year.
