Southern Tussock Moth Caterpillar

Dasychira meridionalis

Description:

Very hairy, multicolored (brown, cream) caterpillar with black head containing a small cream-colored spot. Long projections on opposite ends of the caterpillar.

Habitat:

Deciduous woodlands. Prefers Oak as larval food source, but is found on a variety of deciduous trees. This one was photographed in Edgefield County, SC.
