Sun Bear

Helarctos malayanus

Description:

The smallest existing bear species and best climber. The species is threatened by deforestation and loss of habitat. These are in the Sun Bear Conservation Center in Sepilok. They are recued, rehabilitated and released in the wild in safer places than where they were found. I do not classify them as captive because they are in the center only temporarily. In this case a couple was in the displayed area of their enclosed forest. They are territorial and fight with each other so others are kept in different areas. This coupl got along wll so they kept them together. Most of the pics ar of the female who was digging in the ground ins earch for food (mostly insects).

Habitat:

Sepilok, BSBCC.

Thanks! Yes, I was also happy to see the efforts in Sabah to preserve nature and animals and their habitats, in spite of the extension of the palm oil fields :-)
