Eastern Collared Spiny Lizard

Tropidurus torquatus

Description:

A medium sized lizard with large flattened head. This one including the tail was about 250mm long (10"). Light coloured greens with blotches of cream and black with blue pigment around the lips and cheeks. The two diagnostic features however are the dark coloured collar and the frill of small spines around the neck.

Habitat:

This one spotted in the Brazillian Pantanal but generally seen in dryer, open areas. Although mainly a ground dweller it does like to climb and often seen on fence posts, buildings and termite mounds.

Notes:

This is one of a group of about 20 species of spiny lizards all of which are found in Southern America
