Tobacco hornworm caterpillar

Manduca sexta

Description:

These really blend into the color of a tomato plant and I didn't notice them until it as almost too late. They eat the the leaves and flowers from the tip of the branch down. I noticed the die back on the tips of the branches before I noticed the caterpillar. They have a really creepy spine on the end of their bodies, and make a clicking sound when you disturb them. I did remove and kill it from my tomato plant, there were actually two of them the other was much smaller than this one.

Habitat:

Tomato plants, they also feed on other plants such as tobacco. See the attached wikipedia article for more information.
